Get Your Golden Shovel

Last week we kind of ballsed it up. We were running out of time and actually the “Golden Shovel” poem that we wrote, we came up with, hurriedly, on the spot. This week we decided to give ourselves a little more time to write a better poem, with better spelling!

What is “Get Your Golden Shovel” all about? It is a challenge set by our pal Monty over at And basically each Saturday Monty writes us a prompt – using two lines from a well known poem and we (budding aspiring poets) have to come up with a new poem based on the prompt. It’s a lot of fun.

You can check out the rules here. There is also an example included!

And now without much further ado, here is “Golden Shovel” No.2

Golden Shovel No. 02

Cocoa in pods and alligator pears”

The Tropics in New York by Claude McKay

I scraped the barrel and got all the cocoa,

The colour so dark I could have dived straight in,

I dropped vanilla pods.

Into the dough with a little salt and

Water to the mix which I spooned into moulds of alligator,

Baked in 20 and drizzled with sweet pears.

There we have it! We hope you enjoyed. It’s free for all, should you fancy participating. Why don’t you try and flex your poetry muscles.

Once again thanks to the wonder that is Monty – who has given us an excuse to be creative again with our blogging. Until next week…
