Get Your Golden Shovel Collaborative Series

Here we are, week three of the Golden Shovel challenge. And we have totally loved flexing our poetry skills. We still have a long way to go to reach the level of say …Omar Khayyam, but we can say with absolute certainty that we are enjoying the pouring of words. This of course is with special thanks to the one and only Monty Vern – who has brought us back from the brink of bloggers death. We wont lie, it has been a difficult journey of late to keep the blogging juices flowing.

However, we are still here; on the second anniversary of creating our blog Hyacinth for the Soul, taking part in a poetry collaboration, and I am grateful to our efforts to still be visible, in some way or another.

Happy Anniversary T.B.C!

What is Get Your Golden Shovel all about?

What is the Golden Shovel form, you ask? The Golden Shovel form was created by the poet Terrance Hayes, whose poem “Golden Shovel” (from his 2010 collection Lighthead) is based on Gwendolyn Brooks’ “We Real Cool” which references the phrase “Golden Shovel”.

We came to it via Monty who sets the challenge for us. Each Saturday in February, our pal Monty writes us a prompt – using two lines from a well know poem and we (budding aspiring poets, that we are) attempt to write a new poem based on the prompt. It’s a lot of fun!

You can check out the rules here. There is also an example to follow.

Ready? Then here we go…

I cannot rub the strangeness from my sight”

After Apple Picking by Robert Frost (1874-1963)

Me, you… I
Definitely WE cannot
Be, different from the rub
of Divinity, because the,
Separation …carries a Strangeness.
Knowing we are born from,
The same dust as Stars and my
Heart bleeds US, into crystal clear Sight!

With Love
